If you or someone you know is struggling, please consider reaching out to an appropriate individual or organisation for help.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Alessio, 23, was working out in the gym when he overheard something that made his heart race with anxiety. \u201cSome guys were talking about someone they knew who had just taken their own life,\u201d he recalls. \u201cI immediately remembered the pain on Jack\u2019s face when I last saw him.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Alessio and Jack had been friends in high school. Though Jack seemed quiet and rather solitary, he opened up to Alessio and they would have deep conversations. Their paths diverged after graduation, Jack starting a job in IT and Alessio studying computer science at university. They lost touch but Alessio often thought about Jack.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A couple of years later they bumped into each other in town. Although they greeted each other warmly, Alessio was worried by the encounter. \u201cI could tell that Jack was suffering,\u201d he says.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A short time later, overhearing the discussion in the gym about suicide, Alessio reached for his phone.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>So relieved<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1045\" height=\"1200\" src=\"https:\/\/alpha-emena.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2025\/02\/Alessio_feature_IMG_5863_cropped.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5957\" style=\"width:369px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alpha-emena.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2025\/02\/Alessio_feature_IMG_5863_cropped.jpg 1045w, https:\/\/alpha-emena.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2025\/02\/Alessio_feature_IMG_5863_cropped-768x882.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1045px) 100vw, 1045px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Alessio loves playing different instruments.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMy heart was pounding when I called Jack and I was so relieved when he answered. I asked him, \u2018How are you? Do you want to hang out?\u2019 He said yes, so we started spending time together.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Alessio had just begun learning about Alpha through his priest, who wanted to introduce it to the parish. He liked its informal and welcoming culture, and how it brought people together. He thought of Jack, who was really struggling, and invited him to attend his church\u2019s very first Alpha with him. Jack agreed.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt was quite difficult at first because he was really critical,\u201d recalls Alessio. \u201cHe\u2019d get annoyed and say things like, \u2018Why am I doing this? I know about life, and it\u2019s bad.\u2019 But things slowly started to change as he realised he was being listened to and that these were important conversations.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Turning point<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The turning point came during the Alpha weekend. &nbsp;<br>&nbsp;<br>\u201cJust months earlier he had no friends and now people were praying for him and with him. He experienced love and the Holy Spirit. He started seeing this love in the people who were helping him with his problems. I saw his faith growing and growing. He became a believer.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote alignleft has-border-color has-medium-font-size\" style=\"border-color:#414141;border-width:5px;border-radius:13px\"><blockquote><p><mark style=\"background-color:#e42312\" class=\"has-inline-color has-white-color\">We started to hang out and do Alpha together and that changed everything.<\/mark><\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A year later, the two friends were at an Alpha summer camp with hundreds of other young people when Jack shared something with Alessio that shook him to his core.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;He asked me, \u2018Do you remember when you called me that day? I was deciding when to kill myself but then my phone rang and it was you.\u2019 I felt shocked, I had goosebumps,\u201d Alessio shares. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe told me that he had no friends, no purpose but then I called him and we started to hang out and do Alpha together and that changed everything. He still finds life difficult but he\u2019s not wrestling with it alone. He has friends and faith and things to do, including helping out with our church\u2019s Alpha Youth.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Alessio was deeply affected by this experience, too. \u201cWhen I\u2019ve found myself suddenly thinking about someone, I now always send a text or call them to find out how life is going for them.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He also now serves as an Alpha leader at his church \u2013 something that he gets a lot out of.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>I&#8217;ve seen the transformation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote alignright has-border-color\" style=\"border-color:#414141;border-width:5px;border-radius:13px\"><blockquote><p><mark style=\"background-color:#e42312\" class=\"has-inline-color has-white-color\">Alpha is like a second evangelisation and I\u2019m so <\/mark><br><mark style=\"background-color:#e42312\" class=\"has-inline-color has-white-color\">glad to be part of it.<\/mark><\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019ve learned that it\u2019s not about teaching people doctrine but listening and asking questions, keeping the conversation going. I\u2019ve seen the transformation this can bring in people\u2019s lives.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And Alpha is also transforming his church.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Sometimes parishes feel they should be doing a lot of different activities but my priest has simplified things and we just do Alpha. It\u2019s about hospitality and conversation, and helping people experience God. Our parish is changing and a lot of people are finding their purpose and calling.
