“I have a really dark past, which includes drugs and a life of crime,” shares Amos, a 23-year-old Finnish-Moroccan Christian musician, who won Young Songwriter of the Year at the Glow Gospel Awards in 2025.
Hurt by his parents’ divorce when he was very young and feeling “left out of the family” when his mother eventually remarried, Amos’s life began to spin out of control.
To cope, he began experimenting with drugs in seventh grade and eventually started selling them, too, moving onto harder and harder drugs.
Really broken
“I was really broken,” he admits. At the same time, he was searching for something more that would bring meaning to his life. Amos didn’t yet know it, but God was already leading him towards people and spaces – including Alpha – that would help him to rebuild his life.
In 2023, he was at a birthday party when a friend shared the Gospel with him “It was the first time I heard what Jesus did for me,” he says.
This got him thinking more and more about Jesus, so, soon after, he found the nearest church. “I walked in and sat at the back. God met me there and for the first time I experienced His love.”
Supernatural encounters
Wanting to know God more intimately, Amos prayed that He would reveal Himself to him. This prayer was answered and Amos had what he describes as “really supernatural encounters” where he met Jesus three days in a row through different people who prayed for him and told him that Jesus loves him and is calling him. This marked a turning point and Amos gave his life to Jesus.
Amos didn’t yet know it, but God was already leading him towards people and spaces – including Alpha – that would help him to rebuild his life.
Although Amos began going to church regularly, he struggled to change his old lifestyle. “But I realised that the things I was trying to fill myself with couldn’t fill me, so I cried out to God, ‘I need you now,’” he shares.
With God’s help, he let go of the things that were binding him, and got baptised. He also signed up for Alpha – an important step in his faith journey.
“It was a really, really good experience for me,” he shares. “If I had done Alpha earlier, when I was struggling so much, it would have done a lot for my growth process. There is such a good atmosphere where you can have discussions, and if there are tough questions you can ask them. I would recommend Alpha to everyone, whether they are a Christian or not.”
Amos now shares his faith through his music, including his song Mis Mä Olisin (‘Where would I be?’), in which he reflects on how his life has been transformed through God’s grace. (See translated lyrics below.) Amos performed at Alpha Finland’s 30th anniversary celebration in January, singing some of his songs and sharing his story of transformation.
